The principal occupations of the people of Pikit is agriculture, considering a vast expanse of lowlands planted with corn, rice, coconuts and other diversified crops. Agriculture covers an area of about 25,301.16 hectares or about 90.49% of the total land area.
Being the most staple food crop of the populace, corn occupies some 10,568 hectares or 37.80 of the total land area or 41.77% of the land devoted to agriculture, producing some 5,681 metric tons a year. It is claimed that 95% of the local residents are corn eaters.
Rice production is next. Rice farms cover some 7,988 hectares or 28.57% of the total land area or 31.57% of the agricultural land. The production of rice amounts to about 2,834 metric tons a year.
Coconut and copra are the town’s another agricultural product. Coconut production accounts for over 6,092 hectares or 24.08% of the land devoted to agriculture. It gives an annual yield of 1,842.30 metric tons of copra.
The municipality has also some areas planted to diversified crops like vegetables, cassava, camote, ube, and other root-crops. It annual production amounts about 261.6 metric tons. The rest of the areas are planted with fruit-bearing trees which give an annual yield of 44.6 metric tons. These agricultural crops support the regular income of the local populace.
The people also engage in livestock breeding, an activity for which the municipality is noted for and which has once made the province famous. Cattle are raised along with other livestock animals on a minor scale and slaughtered for local consumption.
Large animals like cattle, carabaos and horses, the working animals of the farmers and ranchers, are also raised. Likewise, chicken, turkey, and other fowl animals are breed in the farms to supplement the farmer’s income. |
